Family in Heidelberg

Heidelberg works beautifully with children: short distances, plenty of green space and attractions that mix history with fun. From a castle straight out of a storybook to the zoo and the funicular, there is something for every age and every kind of weather.

The classics for kids

Heidelberg's zoo, home to roughly 2,500 animals, is the number one family draw. The Märchenparadies (Fairy Tale Paradise) on the Königstuhl combines small rides with fairy-tale scenes and sits right at the funicular's summit station. The castle, with its Großes Fass (Great Tun), fascinates the little ones too.

Outdoors and on rainy days

The Neckarwiese meadow gives kids room to run, bike and eat ice cream. On rainy days, the Kurpfälzisches Museum, the Pharmacy Museum or a movie are good calls. And with the historic Bergbahn funicular, even getting there is part of the experience.
