The Weststadt is Heidelberg's refined residential district – defined by Gründerzeit villas, wide boulevards and fine cafés. Wilhelmsplatz, Rohrbacher Straße and Kaiserstraße form its backbone, with the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage marking its northern edge. Affluent Heidelberg has lived here since the 1870s – some 150 years of Gründerzeit history right next to the Old Town and the main station.
The Weststadt was laid out as a planned extension of the city after Heidelberg was connected to the railway network. The result is a largely intact Gründerzeit ensemble of imposing façades, stucco villas and shaded avenues – a favourite for anyone looking for the bourgeois Heidelberg beyond the castle and the Old Town.
Today the Weststadt is a sought-after residential quarter with a high quality of life: short distances into the centre, plenty of period apartments, small delicatessens, cafés and the green Wilhelmsplatz as its neighbourhood hub. Being close to the main station and Bismarckplatz also makes it easy to reach for commuters and visitors.
