Boxberg

A woodland-park settlement above Rohrbach – high-rises, terraced and detached houses on a Scandinavian model, with sweeping views over Heidelberg.

Boxberg was built from 1960 as a woodland-park settlement above Rohrbach – planned on a Scandinavian model, with high-rises among the trees and detached and terraced houses on the meadows. The first tenants moved in in October 1962, and the main construction was complete by the late 1960s/early 1970s. Its hillside setting gives residents an unobstructed view over Heidelberg, the Rhine-Neckar valley and, on clear days, as far as the Palatinate.

Boxberg is one of Heidelberg's post-war planned settlements: from 1960, a carefully composed ensemble of high-rises among the trees plus terraced and detached houses went up on the edge of the forest above Rohrbach, inspired by Scandinavian models. The first residents moved in in 1962.

The district's great advantage is its position: forest on the doorstep, plenty of greenery and a sweeping panorama over the Neckar valley and the Rhine plain. Its own local centre with shops, schools and kindergartens makes Boxberg a quiet, family-friendly place to live high above the city.
