District
Emmertsgrund
Heidelberg's southernmost district – a planned large housing estate of the late 1960s and 1970s on a hillside, with views and ongoing change.
Emmertsgrund was conceived in the late 1960s and built from 1969 as a planned large housing estate on the hillside above Heidelberg; the first residents moved in in 1973. Its slope-side location sets it slightly apart from the rest of the city. Today a diverse community of many nationalities lives here – a district with renewal initiatives, its own primary school and a community centre with a media hub.
Emmertsgrund was planned in the late 1960s as a modern large housing estate and built from 1969 on the hillside above Heidelberg; the first residents moved in in 1973. Its urban design followed the ideal of the time: dense, car-friendly satellite settlements with plenty of green space between the rows of housing.
The exposed hillside position gives the district a wide view over the Rhine plain, while also setting it somewhat apart from the rest of the city. Today an international community lives here; the community centre, the primary school and numerous local initiatives strengthen life in a quarter that keeps developing.
