District
Handschuhsheim
Heidelberg's northernmost quarter with a village feel – the Tiefburg ruin, old farmsteads, vineyards and the Mühlbach stream.
Handschuhsheim – affectionately called "Hendesse" by locals – is one of the oldest districts, with over 1,200 years of history. The Tiefburg ruin, historic farmsteads in the old village centre and the vineyards on the Heiligenberg give the quarter its unique character between village and city district.
Handschuhsheim is one of the oldest settled places in the region and has kept much of its village independence despite being incorporated into the city. In the historic centre around the Tiefburg – the ruin of a medieval moated castle – half-timbered houses, old farmsteads and the church of St Vitus line up together.
Wine is still grown on the slope of the Heiligenberg, and orchard meadows mark the transition into the Odenwald. A weekly market, an active club scene and long-standing festivals give "Hendesse" a strong sense of community. For walkers the district is a good starting point for the climb up to the Heiligenberg with its Thingstätte and monastery ruins.

St Michaelskloster Heidelberg
St Michael's Monastery in Heidelberg is a beautiful and historic monastery ruin that is definitely worth a visit. Just like the Thingstätte, the monastery of St Michael is located on the Heiligenberg, the second largest mountain in Heidelberg. The monastery was originally founded in the 14th century by the Order of St Michael and has a rich history that spans centuries.
Thingstätte Heidelberg
The Thingstätte is a unique and historically significant open-air theater in Heidelberg. The theater was built in the 1930s, during the Nazi era, and was intended to be a place where the NSDAP could hold political rallies and other events in favor of National Socialism. Despite its controversial past associated with Nazi propaganda efforts during World War II, the Thingstätte remains an important and fascinating part of German history and is now a popular tourist destination.
