Heidelberg's Districts
Heidelberg is more than just the castle and the Old Town. 155,756 people live in 15 districts of very different character – from the medieval Old Town via the science quarter of Neuenheim to the conversion district of Patrick Henry Village.
Altstadt
The historic heart of Heidelberg between the Neckar and the Königstuhl – with the castle, the Old Bridge, the Church of the Holy Spirit and one of Germany's longest shopping streets.
Bergheim
Once an industrial quarter, today a lively neighbourhood – home to the main station, Bismarckplatz and plenty of bars and cafés.
Weststadt
Elegance and Gründerzeit grandeur – stately villas, quiet residential streets, Wilhelmsplatz and easy reach of the main station.
Südstadt
In transition – from a US barracks site to a creative quarter with the Mark Twain Center, Karlstorbahnhof and new housing.
Neuenheim
Right across from the Old Town on the north bank of the Neckar – university campus, the Philosophers' Walk, Tiergartenstraße and lots of students.
Handschuhsheim
Heidelberg's northernmost quarter with a village feel – the Tiefburg ruin, old farmsteads, vineyards and the Mühlbach stream.
Rohrbach
An established suburb in the south with the Boxberg hillside, its own village centre and a mix of long-time residents and young newcomers.
Kirchheim
A southern Heidelberg district – historically an independent municipality, today with a large industrial area and new housing.
Schlierbach
East of the Old Town on the Neckar – a quiet villa quarter on the eastern riverbank, with wooded slopes and the castle in sight.
Ziegelhausen
The easternmost district on the Neckar between vineyards and the Odenwald – almost an idyll, and home to Stift Neuburg abbey.
Wieblingen
One of Heidelberg's westernmost districts on the left bank of the Neckar – an old village core, Wieblingen Castle and the Elisabeth von Thadden School.
Pfaffengrund
Heidelberg's garden city of 1920 – a planned settlement modelled on the German garden-city movement, with green courtyards and a cooperative tradition.
Boxberg
A woodland-park settlement above Rohrbach – high-rises, terraced and detached houses on a Scandinavian model, with sweeping views over Heidelberg.
Emmertsgrund
Heidelberg's southernmost district – a planned large housing estate of the late 1960s and 1970s on a hillside, with views and ongoing change.
Patrick-Henry-Village
Heidelberg's future 16th district – a new model quarter is planned on the former US residential area.
