Bergheim

Once an industrial quarter, today a lively neighbourhood – home to the main station, Bismarckplatz and plenty of bars and cafés.

Bergheim connects historic Heidelberg with the young university city. Directly west of the Old Town, the quarter around the main station and Bismarckplatz is a transport hub, shopping street and nightlife district all in one. Bergheimer Straße and Campus Bergheim (the former Krehl hospital) have become hotspots for young Heidelbergers.

Because the main station and the central transport hub Bismarckplatz are both here, Bergheim is many people's first impression of Heidelberg. The quarter feels distinctly different from the tranquil Old Town: Gründerzeit apartment blocks, offices, clinics and shopping streets make for an urban, mixed streetscape.

Bergheim has changed noticeably in recent years. Cafés, bars and small restaurants have opened around Bergheimer Straße, and the conversion of former clinic and industrial buildings into university and residential space has brought younger life into the quarter. For visitors, Bergheim is above all practical: central, well connected and only a few minutes' walk from the Old Town.
