Ziegelhausen

The easternmost district on the Neckar between vineyards and the Odenwald – almost an idyll, and home to Stift Neuburg abbey.

Ziegelhausen lies three kilometres upstream of the Old Town on the north bank of the Neckar. Stift Neuburg abbey with its brewery, the historic Neckar ferry (which ran until 1954) and a dense network of hiking and cycling trails into the Odenwald make Ziegelhausen the most rural of Heidelberg's districts.

Ziegelhausen lies a few kilometres upstream of the Old Town, where the Neckar valley narrows and turns greener. The district has kept its independent, almost rural character: old village centres, vineyards and the Odenwald forest reach right up to the houses.

Its landmark is Stift Neuburg, a Benedictine abbey above the Neckar with its own monastery brewery and quiet gardens. For anyone active, Ziegelhausen is an ideal base for walks and bike rides into the Neckar valley and the Odenwald – nature at its purest, only minutes from the bustle of the Old Town.
