Shopping in Heidelberg

At roughly one mile, Heidelberg's Hauptstraße is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe and the backbone of any shopping stroll. Chains, boutiques, bookstores and weekly markets mix big-city selection with student-town character.

Where to shop

The department stores and chain retailers start at Bismarckplatz; the farther you walk toward the Kornmarkt, the smaller and more individual the shops become. The Plöck and the side alleys of the Old Town are where you find owner-run stores, antiquarian booksellers and design shops. Weekly markets are held on the Marktplatz and the Wilhelmsplatz, among other spots.

Local shops in the business directory

Beyond the sights, the city's business directory is worth a look: it lists Heidelberg retailers, boutiques and service providers with addresses and contact details, from sneaker stores to specialty food shops. That part of the site is in German.
