Sights in Heidelberg
About a million people are transported from Old Town to Königstuhl, the landmark mountain of Heidelberg, by the funicular railway each year. Being precise, there are two funicular railways that are transporting people in a convenient way. In the lower section, between the stations Kornmarkt, Castle and Molkenkur, is a modern type of funicular railway, named "Molkenkurbahn". In the upper section, up to the mountain station, you will be transported by Germany's oldest electric funicular railway, called "Königstuhlbahn". It was installed on the 1st of June 1907 and is still working properly.
The people of Heidelberg are loving their funicular railway. It was very well proofed, when in 2002 plannings became public, that the historical cabins of the funicular railway should be replaced by modern cabins for security reasons. The citizens were protesting against this decision until it was decided to keep the old cabins and to restore them. After restoration was finished in March 2005, both historical cabins were put into service again.
Starting from the mountain station (550 m above sea level), you can easily discover the environs by using well prepared hiking trails. Interesting views over the Neckar valley, the Rhine valley and Heidelberg will be amazing for all visitors. Near by the mountain station you can visit a fairy tale theme park, which is very popular for young visitors.
