Mountain cemetery - Bergfriedhof Heidelberg

Mountain cemetery of Heidelberg A very special and romantic place is the mountain cemetery of Heidelberg. It was opened in 1844 and designed by the landscape architect Johann Christian Metzger. He was able to perfectly embed the cemetery into the mountain scenery by building asymmetrical fields and curved paths. Even today it is one of the most beautiful and amazing cemeteries of Germany because of its huge amount of old trees and the park-like appearance.

If you are taking time to watch all the beautiful tombstones built in the last 160 years, you will recognize a symbiosis between history, arts and nature. A lot of famous people from Heidelberg are buried in the mountain cemetery. If you take a walk through the unstructered lines of graves, you'll find their graves and monuments. Discover the tombstones of the scientists Carl Bosch and Robert Bunsen. Friedrich Ebert, the first president of the German Reich is also buried in the mountain cemetery, as well as the inventor Felix Wankel, the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, the sociologist Max Weber and the poet Hilde Domin.

You can go to the mountain cemetery by tram lines 23 and 24, or by city bus line 29.
